MAN BOOBS OR "MOOBS"

What Are Man Boobs Or 'Moobs'?

The medical term for 'man boobs' is gynecomastia or enlarged male mammary glands.

More and more Internet research is being done on this subject as men become more conscious of having large breasts. The condition can affect up to 60% of men, including infants and adolescents. Why are they becoming larger, why is it affecting more and more men? Often the cause is given as idiopathic or 'unknown', but when looking through the possible causes, there are a great many.

Alarmingly, male breast reduction surgery is a fastest growing procedure in plastic surgery in England. The British Association of Plastic Surgeons reported 581 men had breast reductions in 2009, an increase of 80% over the previous year.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimate 18,000 men in the States had the surgery in 2008. It is in the top five cosmetic surgery procedures performed on males. Of these men, 14,203 were between the ages of thirteen to nineteen, a 79% increase in adolescent surgery since 2003.

Causes of Man Boobs

  • Estrogen
  • Androgen antagonists or antiandrogens
  • HIV medications
  • Anti-anxiety drugs
  • Anti-depressants
  • Corticosteroids
  • Cimetidine
  • Chemotherapy
  • Heart medications
  • Alcohol
  • Amphetamines
  • Marijuana
  • Heroin
  • Antipsychotics
  • Phytoestrogens – particularly those found in soy

The female sex hormone estrogen is mitogenic, in other words it causes cells to divide and multiply, including fat cells. The breast is particularly sensitive to it however, estrogen is not entirely to blame. Anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders cause stimulation of breast tissue, leading to moobs. The rising obesity epidemic is another cause.  Androgen antagonist drugs given for prostate cancer, BHP etc increase breast size. Some anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants and heart medications do too. All of these medications are on the increase.  Antipsychotics increase prolactin levels, this is the hormone of lactogenesis. It can cause a milky discharge from male breasts, as it does in the female breast when breast feeding.

What can be done for this? By using progesterone!! In the initial stages of using progesterone 'man boobs' could become bigger until progesterone becomes the dominant hormone. Apart from the obvious female symptoms, males experience estrogen dominant symptoms too when using progesterone for the first time.
